Tamil Maanila Congress (Moopanar) president G.K. Vasan on Friday (November 14, 2025) said the Tamil Nadu government should take proactive measures to stop the Karnataka government from constructing a balancing reservoir across the Cauvery at Mekedatu.

In a statement, Mr. Vasan said the Karnataka government had not obtained clearance from the Centre for constructing the balancing reservoir at Mekedatu. “However, the Supreme Court granting approval for the Karnataka government to proceed with the preparation of the Detailed Project Report for the Mekedatu project is a matter of serious concern,” he said.

The Tamil Nadu government should file submissions in the Supreme Court to safeguard the rights of the State. The DMK government should under no circumstance step back on this matter considering its alliance calculations, as the Cauvery river is essential for agriculture in the Delta districts and also serves as drinking water for several districts, he added.
