‘What was home minister doing?’ Mahua Moitra targets Amit Shah after EC says ’56 lakh illegal voters in Bihar’; demands his resignation | India News

NEW DELHI: TMC MP Mahua Moitra on Friday demanded accountability from Union home minister Amit Shah over Election Commission’s claim that there were 56 lakh illegal electors in Bihar, as revealed by its controversial Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise.Pointing out that border-related issues came under the ministry of home affairs, Moitra demanded Amit Shah’s resignation, saying, “If the central government thinks that 56 lakh people have infiltrated Bihar, then what was the home ministry doing? It’s the responsibility of the Home Minister, and he should resign.”“Such a thing has never happened in the history of India. Election Commission, which is a constitutional body, is working as a branch of the BJP. CEC speaks like a spokesperson of the BJP… In 24 hours, the number of untraceable voters has gone from over 11000 to more than 1 lakh,” she said.EC had said revealed on Thursday that around one lakh voters were “untraceable,” while another 55 lakh had been reported as either deceased, permanently migrated, or registered in multiple locations. These 56 lakh names, amounting to 7% of Bihar’s 7.9 crore electorate as of June 24, 2025, had been classified as “incorrectly included electors.” According to an EC official, their presence on the rolls could have created a serious risk of bogus voting in the upcoming election. The official suggested that one lakh “non-existent” voters could be illegal immigrants, possibly from neighboring states like Bengal, who got enrolled in Bihar through corrupt means or weak verification during roll revisions. All 56 lakh incorrectly listed voters will be excluded from the draft electoral roll to be published on August 1.
