A woman security guard identified as Prashanti (24) died at SVRR Hospital in Tirupati on Friday, following her attempt at self-immolation over alleged estrangement with her boyfriend.
According to Kuppam police, Prashanti worked at the APSRTC’s Proddatur depot in Kadapa after she got the job on compassionate grounds after the demise of her father, a police constable. She reportedly fell in love with one Vasu (27), a finance company agent, at Proddatur, and a resident of Marwada village of Kuppam mandal in Chittoor district. After an association of five years, Vasu had reportedly declined to marry her and returned to his native village eight months ago and got married to his niece.
As Vasu was ignoring her calls, Prashanti reached his village on Tuesday night which led to an heated argument between them, following which Vasu reportedly threatened to kill her. Village elders intervened and summoned Prashanti’s mother, who arrived on Wednesday.
The elders convinced the woman’s mother and urged her to talk to her daughter. The mother and daughter left Kuppam and reached Kadapa late on Wednesday.
However, Prashanti left home early on Thursday morning and reached Marwada village late in the evening. En route, she reportedly purchased one litre petrol and filled it in a water bottle.
She reached Vasu’s residence and created a scene outside his house and attempted self-immolation. The neighbours immediately rushed her to the Government Hospital at Kuppam on Thursday night, and later to the PES Hospital, and finally shifted her to the SVRR Hospital in Tirupati. With more than 70% burn injuries, the woman breathed her last on Friday afternoon.
The Kuppam police, who registered a case on Thursday night, took Vasu into custody. The police are also investigating into the charges that he cheated Prashanti to the tune of several lakhs of rupees.
