World Boxing eyes AI-powered review to restore integrity ahead of LA Olympics: president Boris van der Vorst

Outgoing World Boxing (WB) president Boris van der Vorst on Monday said that the new apex body for amateur boxing, which is tasked to conduct the sport in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, is working on an Artificial Intelligence (AI) pilot project to ensure the competition’s integrity.

“The main challenge is still the competition’s integrity. I hope by exploring modern technology we will be able to engage, for example, AI in bout reviews so that we restore the trust of fans, boxers, coaches, and everyone involved so that only the best boxer’s hand is raised,” van der Vorst said on the sidelines of the World Boxing Cup Finals.

“We are now piloting with AI and providers in getting a bout review, and hopefully that will be finished when we are in LA. I cannot promise anything, but I can only tell you it’s important that we keep developing as a sport. That’s the only way to show that you’re relevant.”

The WB chief said the qualification process for LA28, which has not been fully finalised, will be a combination of continental qualifiers and world qualifiers.

Van der Vorst listed funding and getting several other unaffiliated national and international federations on WB’s side as some major challenges for the global body.

While calling upon boxing stakeholders in India to work together, the WB president expected the country’s boxers to land medals in the 2028 and 2032 Olympics.
